Seven Deadly Sins
As a mother I work hard to balance an awareness of the troubled world we live in, with the beauty and wonder that is also around us.
My inspirations are my daughters and their lives. I believe it is important for them to learn the values and virtues of kindness and generosity for example by knowing the consequences of selfishness and greed.
The other significant influence is a long love affair I have had with collecting old photographs, that offer a voyeuristic insight into another world and another time. These have offered some of the most exciting and inspirational discoveries; one of my earliest adventures involving these, was replicating a short series of tourist shots from the 1940's that were taken around Paris, by finding the street and angle, I was able to offer an insight into another time in an evocative way.
I began collecting tin types and daguerrotypes from the turn of century years ago. The images and portraits I have discovered while looking at these have helped spirit me away to another more romantic, mythical era, an era of literature and nobility, or sins unspoken and secret gifts.
It is this juxtaposition of ideas that inspired my newest series, Seven Deadly Sins. A series of seven hand made one of of a kind, tin-types. Photographed with a wet plate collodion wooden camera that I feel forces the viewer into another era and beautifully illustrates the magical innocence of youth alongside the darker recesses of human nature.
